Welcome to Free Black Femmes, a news site co-founded by Maya and Hannah, two sisters and best friends living on opposite coasts. As Black women living in these wild times, we check in with each other daily, whether it’s an hour-long FaceTime session, shared TikToks, or a texted meme. There’s no good or bad moment that we don’t share with each other.
We have real, funny, heartfelt and insightful conversations that we want to share with our community. And by community we mean Black folks who are femme-identifying. Our wish is to add color to your space on the Internet and timelines.
We love keeping up with celebrities, news, and pop culture. But too often, our timelines are filled with problematic public figures who get too much shine and divisive conversations that negatively impact Black women. Our goal is to inspire, uplift, and entertain. So while we highlight Black culture, it will be from a fresh, feminist perspective.
Our Origin
Free Black Femmes launched in 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic. Social unrest and black squares dominated the timeline and we wanted to stand out amongst all the noise. So we created FBF, as a safe online space for Black women and non-binary folks.
We gained some traction but life (bills, mental health, family stuff) got in the way. But we thought of our passion project often and midway through 2024, we decided to give it our all and created this site.
Who is the Free Black Femme?
The Free Black Femme is a Black woman or non-binary person who decides to live on their terms, in direct protest of the patriarchy. They may be an artist, a scientist, a sex worker, or a business owner.
We hold the following beliefs to be true:
✊🏿ALL Black lives matter.
✊🏾Trans women ARE women.
✊🏿Patriarchy must be dismantled.
✊🏽Beyoncé is our Savior 🐝
We promise to be a safe space for open dialogue among Black women and non-binary folks. Everyone else takes a back seat or they can get off the bus ✌🏿 We love y’all for real 🖤
