About Us
They Were Sisters
We are Maya and Hannah, the co-founders of Free Black Femmes. We’re two Black women from Bridgeport, Connecticut, who happen to be sisters and best friends. Growing up, our 5 year age gap made us feel like we lived on two different planets. But by our 20s, we put aside our beef and bonded over ice cream, dogs, family trauma, Beyoncé, pop culture, and social justice.
Now that we live on opposite coasts, we communicate daily, whether through FaceTime, TikTok streaks, or text messages. FBF is an extension of our love for each other and the culture.
I’m Maya.
My pronouns are she/her and I’m the big sister. I’m a fat, Black, queer writer and SEO Strategist living in Los Angeles.
I’m also a pop culture fanatic who dabbles in sociology and history. When I’m not eating my way through L.A., I’m lounging at home on my pink couch binge-watching old TV shows.
I’m Hannah.
My pronouns are she/her. I’m a Black woman living in the often-forgotten state of Connecticut.
By day, I’m a Strategic Communications Manager, and by night, I’m working toward joining the 7% of Black women in the U.S. with a master’s degree in Business. I believe I can do all things through Beyoncé, and when I’m not crafting campaigns, you can find me at brunch near you.
